![]() ![]() ![]() So, the only thing needed and which has been the most vital for stars like Tom Cruise to remain in the top for so long is choosing the right movies. Well yeah her acting hasn't gotten any worse dramatically so her star power certainly won't wain because of that. I don’t even like JL (my comment history will prove that if you go back far enough), but this fixation Reddit has with her failing got old a long time ago. ![]() Mother! not doing well isn’t going to ruin JL’s career. None of the X-Men/Hunger Games movies did poorly. Passengers more than made twice its budget, which still makes it a non-flop, even if other space movies made more. RDJ’s The Judge flopped, Ryan Gosling’s The Nice Guys/Song to Song/Gangster Squad/Blade Runner, Emma Stone’s Battle of the Sexes, Scarlett Johansson’s Ghost in the Shell/Girls’ Night Out, Michael Fassbender’s last six projects, Alicia Vikander’s Tulip Fever and Light Between the Oceans etc.Įveryone has flops once in a while. How many big stars are there at this point who can maintain a decent box office run? Maybe Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio, but even someone like The Rock who was the highest grossing star a few years back has had flops, most recently with Baywatch. I'm just saying I think it's better for you. It stops your development right in its tracks, okay? I mean like everything and I ain't trying to get you to be like fucking me or anything. Some of my favorite filmmakers made bad movies. And who knows? That other stuff could be awesome. QT: "And fuck man, hating movies closes you off to stuff that seems like whatever you hate. You know how many feet of film I burned on this thing when I was trying to be like something else that was great? Like fucking Pole Fighter, like what you said? No, all the best stuff came out of me just trying to avoid mistakes." You know, it's easy!" Fuck no! Bad movies teach you what not to do and what to correct in your process and that's way more helpful. I man you can't like fucking look at Kurosawa and be all "Oooh just do what Kurosawa did. You can learn so much about the craft from bad movies. And I mean if you want to do this for a fucking living and you're absolutely serious, then never hate a movie. QT: Even the bombs, man, heck, especially the bombs man. Spotting where exactly the movie failed and what it tried to achieve is an excellent film critique learning experience that I recommend to everyone with MoviePass (or equivalent).īTW, Tarantino has a great quote about it, which maybe conveys it better than I did: I find watching bad or disappointing movies to teach me much more about filmmaking than watching great movies, so I don't think it's a total waste of time. It seemed to be setup for Red Sparrow 2, though I really doubt we're going to see a sequel. But Charlotte Rampling is the epitome of Britishness and she sometimes forgets to put on the cliché Russian accent (she's a first class actress, but playing a Russian does not really compute). Matthias Schoenaerts was the only one pulling it off and there is Ciaran Hinds as Zakharov. The Russian vibe was also largely absent with the cast of non-Russians. This one is not as engaging, as cold as the personality of Dominika. That movie was way more fun with its tongue-in-cheek approach. I'm going to compare it with Atomic Blonde, as other reviews do. But it leaves you wonder what the purpose was of those scenes, with a better script the movie could have been more enjoyable. The cinematography is superb and technically the torture scenes were competently brought on screen. Like others have noted: the movie could easily have been half an hour shorter, I'd even say 45 minutes shorter. It highlighted that the first half was quite good but the latter half was progressing at a snail's pace. I saw it in a theater that had an intermission for this movie (to sell more popcorn).
